Presentation 1: Take Back Our Rivers

Presented by:  Mark Liptrot from Constantia Afripack

This talk discusses a pilot project in a small catchment area, the Aller/Mbongokazi River. This has a course of 13km, winding through urban, industrial and rural riparian zones. Rivers in the eThekwini Metropolitan (greater Durban) area are badly degraded and show poor biodiversity. They are often considered by the surrounding communities as dumping grounds for their waste. This has a knock-on effect downstream, as evidenced by high bacterial loading as well as the huge amounts of litter found after heavy rains on Durban’s beaches, harbour and estuaries. An initial assessment of the river in November 2015 showed that the Aller was severely impacted by illegal dumping of all types of waste, inflows of semi-treated wastewater, raw sewage and extensive stands of invasive alien vegetation. Following this assessment, the Ethekwini Conservancies Forum applied for funding to develop a programme to ‘Take Back our Rivers’ (TBOR), with the Aller being considered a suitable pilot project.

Presentation 2: Rethinking plastic: the role of business in averting environmental catastrophe and building a circular economy

Presented by: Steve Cohen Durban Green Corridor

A number of recent international studies have illustrated that land-based plastic pollution in our oceans is one of the main global threats to the health of our planet. Over 8 million tons of plastic - a full dump truck every minute â€" enters our oceans every year. Durban has been shown to be a significant global contributor to mismanaged waste finding its way into the ocean.
