eThekwini Municipality - Country's First Development Sailing Regatta Set To Make Waves2017-04-03
Tomorrow will see the first of an exhilarating four-day development youth sailing regatta at the port of Durban until April 4 2017. The regatta will see 54 youth are expected to participate in the races over three days that culminate in an evening of prize giving.
The first ever development competition in which sailors from various South African cities will pit their skills against each other and get an opportunity to meet socially. EThekwini Maritime Cluster is hosting this event in partnership with National Department of Transport, eThekwini Municipality and private sector stakeholders. The event is in keeping with the theme of the 2nd Annual Maritime Summit which begins on the 3rd of April at the Transnet Maritime School of Excellence, Connecting Ports, Ships and Communities. The theme threads through the programme highlighting the importance of coherent and connected development across all maritime sectors. “Sailing as a sport has always been for a selected few that can afford access to such facilities the consequence is that many youth living in Durban and other port cities have not had the opportunity to become familiar with the maritime environment, despite living close to the coast. This is a combined effort to promote the transformation of sailing through this regatta,†said Thato Tsautse, MD EThekwini Maritime Cluster. The competition will consist of ten teams of youth aged 15 to 20 competing over three days (with one rest day) for honours in this inaugural intercity youth regatta. Teams from Cape Town’s Royal Cape Yacht Club, Port Elizabeth and Pretoria have confirmed that they will take part and Durban will field an all girls’ team, Sail Africa, Royal Natal Yacht Club, and Point Yacht Club and Eden School are all entering. The regatta is organised by EMC, Sail Africa Youth Development Foundation, Royal Natal and Point Yacht Clubs, and has the support of the EThekwini Municipality Sport and Recreation Unit as well as SA Sailing. This is the perfect way to kick start the school holiday. The regatta is free to the public and begins each day from the Durban Marina and different routes will be sailed over the four days to give spectators an opportunity to view from the roof of Sail Africa, the Durban yacht marina and Wilson Wharf. The first race will start at 11 am and the last at 2 pm. It is expected that there will be three to four races a day on Sunday and Monday and one on the Friday and Tuesday depending on the weather. Different circuits will be sailed each day in the Port of Durban to allow for spectator viewing from the roof of Sail Africa or from the deck of Point Yacht Club or Royal Natal Yacht Club and from Wilson Wharf.
