eThekwini Municipality - MAYOR DONATES R3 MILLION TO COMMUNITY-BASED ORGANISATION

2017-10-09

ETHEKWINI Municipality donated close to R3 million Grant-in-Aid funding to 107 beneficiaries, providing much needed assistance to several community based Non-Profit Organisations (NPOs). The NPOs from various Municipal wards received cheques from the Municipality’s Sundry Grant-in-Aid programme worth R28 000 each.

The programme provides financial and material support to NPOs, especially in impoverished communities. The cheques were handed over by Mayor Zandile Gumede and the Chairperson of the Community Services Committee Councillor Zama Sokhabase.

Addressing beneficiaries, Mayor Gumede said the Municipality is committed to supporting NPOs because of the good work they do in their respective communities.

“We recognise that NPOs are important pillars of our communities and that is why we will continue to provide support to these organisations so they can help deal with various issues at ward level,” she said.

Mayor Gumede said the Grant-in-Aid programme provides funding to community based organisations to enhance the work that they provide to communities. “We acknowledge the immense contribution made by NPOs.”

She said the Municipality supports different sectors, including youth organisations, senior citizens, community projects and soup kitchens. “We also seek to promote and support early childhood development,” she said.

Issuing a stern warning to corrupt organisations, Mayor Gumede said: “Those who will be found misusing tax payers’ money will face the full might of the law. You must use these funds for the benefit of the community you are serving.”

Senior Manager of Policy and Administration at Community Participation and Action Support Unit Xoliswa Mashiane said the number of organisations that benefit from the grant depends on the number of applications the City receives and the number of organisations that qualify. “Organisations were screened and verified to ensure that they are not phantom organisations.”

Mashiane said her office was expecting reports from all the organisations that benefited on the day, outlining the work they have undertaken as per the memorandum of agreement. “We will also visit your organisations without notifying you. We want to see if you are doing what you committed to doing. We want you to continue to be the extension of government by continuing to do good work.”
