Durban Records Best Ever Airfreight Volumes

2018-02-25

a record-breaking increase of 13.7 percent in Durban’s international cargo volumes has been praised by eThekwini Municipality as the high cargo throughput is expected to impact positively on the local economy.

The achievement was announced on 1 February by Dube TradePort (DTP) management who emphasised that this is the highest increase captured in the third quarter when compared to the same period last year. “This is the highest ever recorded cargo throughput during the months of October and November 2017, which exceeded the 1,700 tonne mark per month for the first time.”

DTP said the spike has been primarily driven by the introduction of additional widebodied passenger flights into Durban, as well as the increased frequency of chartered aircraft using King Shaka International Airport.

“Investment in a new specialised outsized cargo handling facility has significantly contributed to our ability to handle bulky shipments,” said Mlibo Bantwini, Dube Cargo
Terminal Executive. Bantwini added that this infrastructure, as well as the systems in place, has enabled supply-chain specialists to respond quickly to the needs of the company’s freight forwarders by providing them with a reliable and competitive solution for their charters flying into Durban.

Russell Curtis from Invest Durban said this demonstrates the strength and diversity in local business base and underlines the growing importance of timesensitive freight in local value chains. He added that the DTP infrastructure and services in support of these globalised value chains continues to underline Durban’s relevance as a major
business hub.

Curtis said the City is thrilled about this new record of airfreight volumes and proud to have contributed to the success. He said the Municipality across multiple units has been supporting DTP in various elements such as the bulk infrastructure growth, town planning approvals, new foreign investor attraction and international marketing.

“DTP continues to be a key catalytic project growth node for eThekwini hence we are currently ramping up our participation to further develop the route. Our catalytic projects office team continue to prioritise and facilitate the bulk infrastructure and planning approvals for the precinct. As a result of our commitment, our investment dashboard of new investors targeting DTP is growing. Also large existing local businesses, such as banks, property developers and hospitality industry giants are also coming on board now to better market the region and attract more global tourists, both leisure and business,” added Curtis.

Durban’s international cargo volumes in the third quarter increased by 13.7 percent when compared to the same period last year.
