Bloodhound project faces financial crunch, seeks R475m

Bloodhound Programme, the UK company behind Project Bloodhound, the initiative to break the land-speed world record (currently at 1 227.98 km/h), has run into serious financial trouble. The company has entered into administration, with the appointment of Andrew Sheridan and Geoff Rowley, partners at specialist business advisory firm FRP Advisory LLP, as joint administrators.   Project Bloodhound was founded in 2007 and aims to hit speeds of 1 600 km/h at a specially built, 18 km long, 1 500 m wide race track at Hakskeen Pan, in South Africa's Northern Cape province.   In addition to seeking to break the land-speed world record, the project is the focal point for a science, engineering and maths education campaign.   To date the project has operated on a partnership and sponsorship model, with support from a variety of partners, including Rolls-Royce and Rolex, the UK Ministry of Defence and the Northern Cape provincial government, with the latter supporting the creation of the track. view more

Thousands of National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa are expected to strike in more than 450 companies in the plastic sector on Monday over wages and benefits, the union said. South Africa's mobile operators are seemingly starting to embrace over-the-top (OTT) services, with offerings of OTT-related bundles with lower effective rates per megabyte of data, the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa's (Icasa's) latest tariff analysis report shows. No digital migration funds have been wasted - Mokonyane

The Department of Communications (DoC) will continue to have the remaining set-top boxes (STBs) it has already procured distributed ahead of the implementation of the new broadcasting digital migration model in March next year. None of the R10-billion in expenditure or procurements undertaken to date will go to waste nor had it all been spent solely on the decoders, the DoC said, noting that the Universal Service and Access Agency of South Africa (Usaasa) and the South African Post Office (Sapo) will continue with the distribution of the remaining STBs using the old model until decoder depletion. view more

AfriCanopy to deploy low-cost Internet to rural KwaZulu-Natal in TV white space trial

The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (Icasa) has approved plans for telecoms start-up AfriCanopy to embark on an eight-month commercial trial of television white space (TVWS) devices. AfriCanopy will now deploy high-speed, low-cost broadband using its new telecoms technology to the 85 000 residents of the King Cetshwayo municipality, in KwaZulu-Natal, as well as provide free Internet access to about 50 rural schools across the region. view more

Eskom executive for generation Thava Govender quits

Eskom's group executive for generation, Thava Govender, on Monday tendered his resignation after assuming the position only in March this year, the power utility's spokesperson Khulu Phasiwe said. Govender, who was also acting group executive of risk and sustainability, has worked for Eskom for 27 years. During that time, Govender served in various capacities including as group executive of transmission and customer services and as the divisional executive of generation division. view more
