Sasol's new strategy shuns GTL as specialty chemicals emerge as key growth driver

Thursday 23rd November 2017

Chemicals and energy group Sasol is preparing to sell several assets, including its Canadian shale gas assets, following an overhaul of its corporate strategy, which eschews any further greenfield gas-to-liquids (GTL) investments in favour of smaller acquisitions and projects of between $500-million and $1-billion. In future, the group's growth would be targeted towards opportunities in the areas of specialty chemicals, Southern African fuel retailing and gas and oil exploration and production in Mozambique and West Africa. Oil refining, GTL, commodity chemicals and renewable-energy were no longer viewed as growth drivers. It would, however, seek to leverage renewable-energy to enable it to reduce emissions. view more

South Africa keeps rate at 6.75%, says risks to inflation rising

Thursday 23rd November 2017

South Africa's central bank kept its benchmark repo rate at 6.75% on Thursday, in-line with expectations, citing increased risks to inflation posed by currency weakness, possible credit downgrades and political jostling. "The lead-up to the African National Congress national elective conference and its uncertain outcome is also likely to continue to weigh on the currency," governor Lesetja Kganyago said, referring to the ruling party's conference in December to elect a successor for President Jacob Zuma as its head. view more

Africa specialist punts local presence as key to capitalising as infrastructure spend set to boom

Thursday 23rd November 2017

Through innovation in the energy sphere, Africa is slowly starting to overcome historical blockages that have prevented the continent from achieving economic growth and creating sustainable jobs, according to energy consultancy Africa House director Duncan Bonnett. Speaking at a PowerGen and DistribuTECH breakfast in Sandton on Thursday, Bonnett noted that such blockages as a lack of urbanisation masterplans in cities, a lack of finance and market access, a lack of reliable power and transport utilities in the continent's industrial sectors, and a lack of finance and ancillary infrastructure in the information and communication technology, telecommunications and power sectors, still held back many countries on the continent. view more

Presenting the entity's annual report, he highlighted that the MMTS Phase 2 pump station and pipeline had been ready for operation by June 2016, while the AMD-STI Eastern Basin plant had been ready for trial operation by March 2016, and ready for handover by August 2016. Both projects met the requirement deadlines. view more

Municipalities in South Africa owe R10bn for water, cuts looming

Thursday 23rd November 2017

The Department of Water and Sanitation on Wednesday said that it was issuing notices to at least 30 municipalities that water supplies will be cut off, by December 8, should they fail to pay their water debt that has been outstanding for more than 60 days. "A total outstanding water debt of R10.7-billion currently exists, with 73% of this amount being outstanding for longer than 60 days. This debt is owed by municipalities, despite Section 65(2)(e) of the Municipal Finance Management Act that obliges municipalities to pay for bulk services within sixty days of receiving the relevant invoice or statement," the department said in a statement. view more
