Friday 22nd September 2017

Researchers at the University of the Witwatersrand are aiming to commercialise a plug-and-play DC-microgrid innovation, which is incrementally scalable to any number of power sources, loads and batteries. The direct-current solution has already been proved at a laboratory level through a test-bed prototype, which has been operating at the respected Johannesburg higher-education institution since 2014. view more

Gigaba calls for criminal probe into KPMG

Friday 22nd September 2017

South African law enforcement agencies should investigate KPMG after the global auditor sacked its top management over work done for business friends of President Jacob Zuma, Finance Minister Malusi Gigaba said on Friday. KPMG dismissed its South African division's top management last week following an internal investigation which found that work it did for firms owned by the Gupta family, a trio of businessmen accused by a watchdog of improperly influencing the award of government contracts, "fell considerably short" of KPMG's standards. view more

Friday 22nd September 2017

Jarana to start as SAA CEO on November 1

Friday 22nd September 2017

South African Airways (SAA) announced that its new CEO Vuyani Jarana will take up his position on November 1.   "The decision follows the conclusion of negotiations with his current employer [Vodacom] on his release date," said SAA spokesperson Tlali Tlali.   Jarana's appointment is intended to bring stability at the executive tier of the airline's leadership, also enabling acting CEO Musa Zwane to return to the maintenance subsidiary, SAA Technical, where he is a full time CE.     One of Jarana's major responsibilities will be to ensure the effective implementation of SAA's recently finalised five-year corporate plan. SAA must return to commercial sustainability in the shortest time possible.   view more

Building the safety case for operating drones beyond visual line of sight

Friday 22nd September 2017

Applications that can benefit from using drones are increasing worldwide, almost daily. However, commercial users of drones are being constrained by generalised legislation, which is difficult to understand and expensive to implement. A much-contested application - and one that is illegal to undertake for the vast majority of drone operators - is using drones beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS). Operating a drone BVLOS refers to flying such aircraft beyond any point where it can be seen with the human eye and, although technology exists for drones to be operated in such a manner - either through a preprogrammed global positioning system (GPS) waypoint-to- waypoint flight path or a digital piloting interface - doing so is almost unanimously unauthorised by any airspace authority. view more

WTO raises global merchandise trade growth estimate to 3.6% for 2017

Friday 22nd September 2017

The World Trade Organisation (WTO) has raised its estimate for growth in world merchandise trade volume for this year to 3.6%. The previous estimate for 2017 was 2.4%, although this was set within a range of between 1.8% and 3.6%, reflecting the high level of economic and policy uncertainty.  The new estimate puts the focus on the top end of that range. Growth of 3.6% would represent a substantial improvement on the lacklustre 1.3% growth in 2016. view more
