Indaka Local Municipality
Indaka Local Municipality is situated in Northern KwaZulu-Natal and is a predominately rural municipality. Indaka has no national roads running through it. The major road is the Helpmekaar road, which runs from Ladysmith and joins the Dundee-Pomeroy road (MR 32). Most of the community access roads are in a very bad condition; some only exist as tracks. The rural nature of the municipality means that it has severe backlogs in infrastructure and the municipality is characterized by much poverty. Service provision needs to addressed and measures are in place to ensure that this process is attended to in the near future.
Economy
Textile, clothing, footwear and leather industries have historically been the mainstay of the regional economy, with food, beverages and tobacco being the other significant manufacturing sub-sector. There are opportunities in these sectors which need to be explored further. The tourism sector also offers many possibilities.
Indaka's economy is currently relying on subsistence agriculture, government services and private household employment. A challenge is therefore to examine and exploit other economic development opportunities. This municipality is geographically located on the periphery of the Coal Rim, Midlands’s economic development cluster, and the battlefield node. It is suggested that Indaka via its Planning and Development Manager liaise with these economic development structures.
Local Economic Development
The introduction of small to medium community projects that address immediate needs is paramount. Other means of improving social economic growth include:
-
The generation of an efficient rates and taxes collection programme
-
Development of capacity and skill to ensure sustainable growth
-
Employment generation by forging a spirit of entrepreneurship
