The Richards Bay Industrial Development Zone Ltd (RBIDZ) is an agency of the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs. It is located in the Province of KwaZulu-Natal, within the growing City of uMhlathuze, which incorporates Empangeni and Richards Bay.

The geographic location of the Zone, neighbouring the Port of Richards Bay and facing the trading currents of the Indian Ocean, brings it nearer to some of the major international trade routes.

It is strategically positioned to service Gauteng and its strong mixture of industry, as well as the SADC’s emerging market economies, which depend largely on the Port of Richards Bay for trade. This location provides investors seeking efficiency and wishing to utilise South Africa, in particular Richards Bay, as an all-in-one official gateway to emerging African markets.

The RBIDZ, which is deemed to be a Special Economic Zone (SEZ), aims to encourage international competitiveness through world-class infrastructure as well as tax, VAT and duty free incentives to qualifying entities.

The RBIDZ is an integral part of Government’s macroeconomic policy to develop South Africa’s manufacturing sector. This is done through encouraging investment in export orientated manufacturing industries, centered on beneficiation of the country’s natural resources
