DELIVERING VALUE
Since inception over 17 years ago,Airports Company South Africa Limited (ACSA) has transformed a fragmented, infrastructural parastatal into a focused, profitable and commercial enterprise that is market-driven and customer service oriented.
ACSA's network of airports play a dominant role in the South African aviation industry, handling over 98% of the country's commercial air traffic. ACSA owns the OR Tambo International, Cape Town International, King Shaka International, Bloemfontein International, George, East London, Kimberley, Port Elizabeth
International, Upington International. The sustained growth in traffic over the years, coupled with a creative and performance focused management and leadership team, headed by CEO Monhla Hlahla, have contributed to the company's excellent financial performance over time. An important development has been the introduction of a balanced scorecard management system. This multi-dimensional system enables us and our stakeholders to consider ACSA's objectives, decisions and actions - and to assess our progress - in relation to four major determinants of business success: financial performance, customer satisfaction, business systems and human capital development. This approach enables ACSA to plan for a future filled with technological, global, economic and regulatory challenges. It enables us to use our assets - including brand, expertise and intellectual capital - to the full.
BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES ABOUND
South Africa's airports have being transformed into multi-faceted, world-class, global gateways for travel, trade and commerce. As a result, business opportunities abound, particularly in property, retail and advertising.
Exciting property development and commercial opportunities are available at all ACSA owned airports - close to arterials, office parks as well as industrial areas, promising excellent long-term returns.
The airport retail experience offered by ACSA and our retail partners ranks up there with the best in the world. Retail is one of our three principal sources of revenue and opportunities are plentiful as we explore the provision of more retail opportunities at all our major airports.
Advertising is another important revenue stream, and an area in which we encourage innovation.
KING SHAKA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT
The King Shaka International Airport at La Mercy opened on the 1 May 2010 and it is now one year into its operation, encouraging more international flights for Durban, supporting tourism growth and giving KwaZulu-Natal direct access to the world. Airports Company South Africa has provided theworld's newest, the latest and the greatest airport. Recently King Shaka International Airport in Durban, South Africa was voted top in the Regional Airport category for Africa in the Skytrax World Airport Awards 2011 and at the Airports Council International (ACI) Awards it was voted 4th Best Airport in Middle East/Africa category.
It is far frombeing 'just an airport'. Together with Dube TradePort, the airport forms a regional development node. This incorporates a 36-hectare Trade Zone, which accommodates a cargo terminal, a perishables centre, warehousing and light manufacturing facilities.
The airport design and initial phase has made provision for passenger capacity to grow from 7, 5 million in 2010/2011 to 45 million by 2060. The 3.7km length of the runway will allow the Airbus A380 and Boeing 747s to use the airport; provision is made for a second runway, parallel to the existing one and with the air traffic control tower between the two should the demand requires it around 2060.
FOCUS ON THE ENVIRONMENT
Our concern with the environment goes to the heart of our focus on sustainability. Our approach is therefore to continue to entrench sound environmental management philosophies and business practices that will sustain ACSA's value into the future.
ACSA complies with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, the Environmental Conservation Act, and the White Paper on Aircraft Noise and Engine Emissions. Our policies and procedures are developed in accordance with national legislation and include:
The management and monitoring of noise pollution, including changes to flight frequency over the same areas and flight patterns.
Alliances with local authorities in neighboring areas to enforce zoning prohibitions and the implementation of the KSIA Aircraft Noise Committee.
Input to the Department of Transport for a draft national policy on noise pollution.
Lobbying airlines for quieter aircraft and participated in international forums to develop strategies to deal with the problem.
Introducing water and energy conservation, waste management and alien vegetation removal/rehabilitation programmes.
Minimizing the impact on storm and ground water by using a specialized product to clear and safely dispose of apron spillages, and monitor storm water monthly to ensure it is not polluted.
ACSA has also partnered with the environmental NGOs, government departments, local communities and other related organization to minimize bird strikes and other contact with wildlife by applying environmentally sensitive management techniques which includes a state of the art bird radar monitoring system as part of the conditions of the ROD. The system monitors the activity of the almost three million barn swallows that visit a reed bedsite annually during November to April.
Added to the programme are some unique and innovative interventions as the Border Collie programme which is part of the bird avoidance programme.
EMPOWERING LOCAL COMMUNITIES
ACSA's social investment is based on empowering local communities, particularly those surrounding ACSA's airports, and marginalized groups in South Africa. It is deeply committed to building South Africa as a nation, and views corporate social investment (CSI) and Enterprise Development (ED) as a vital response to the socio-economic imperatives of the country. The maxim 'moving people, changing lives' represents our business focus and our role as a good corporate citizen in South Africa.
The focus areas of these projects are: Health and welfare, job creation, community development, education, with particular focus on projects that boost infrastructure and education based on promoting and generating tourism in South Africa, and job creation.
Flagship projects funded at a national level include:
Wheelchair Tennis South Africa
Wheel Power (including wheelchairs and bicycles for schools programmes)
Crèche programmes
Community Upliftment Programmes
