Standard Bank KZN Top Business Women . Celebrating the Women of KwaZulu-Natal

2019-11-07

Durban, 7 November 2019. The Standard Bank KwaZulu-Natal Top Business Women gala evening
took place on the 6 November at the Elangeni and Maharani Hotel in Durban.
The Standard Bank KZN Top Business Women event recognised and celebrated some of the
industrious and enterprising female business leaders, entrepreneurs, employees and social change
agents in the province. These women are contributing to their workplaces, to society and to their
families in amazing ways.
Imraan Noorbhai, Standard Bank Provincial Head KwaZulu-Natal said, "The Standard Bank Group is
committed to help create a gender-equal world. The bank has participated in the HeForShe
movement since 2018, which is a UN Women social initiative. HeForShe invites men and women to
support gender equality which is a fundamental human right and a business imperative.
Consequently, we are delighted to be part of this initiative."
Guest speaker for the evening was Funeka Montjane, CEO Personal and Business Banking Standard
Bank South Africa. Montjane is a strong supporter for women's empowerment and is known at the
Bank for encouraging women to overcome any obstacles in their journeys to success or personal
fulfilment.
To obtain the stories that formed the basis for the evening's proceedings, the KZN Top Business
team interviewed 62 women who were profiled through the mediums of video and print. Grant
Adlam, publisher of the KZN Top Business explained, "Our team has been inspired by the many g
women whose stories we have heard. These stories are about ordinary women, from many different
backgrounds, who have had varied journeys to get to where they are today. While some have been
blessed with many advantages, others have overcome trauma, severe illness, life changing accidents,
emotional stress and/or financial hardships to realise their dreams. Each woman featured is
deserving of recognition."
During the evening, six women were given further recognition. They were as follows:
1. Cheryl Govender, owner The Cake House: The courage to realise a dream
2. Lindiwe Rakharebe, CEO, Durban International Convention Centre: Exceeding customer
expectations and delivering brilliant experiences
3. Nomfundo Mcoyi, founder and CEO, Icebolethu Group: Operating effectively and productively
4. Eleni Kwinana executive head, Vodacom, KZN: Fostering a culture of empowerment and diversity
5. Cindy Norcott, owner Pro-Appointments and Pro Talent, founder and chairperson of the Robin
Hood Foundation: Making a difference in the business and community
6. Margaret Hirsch, Chief Operations Executive of Hirsch's: Being a woman extraordinaire
The gala evening not only emphasized a culture of women's empowerment but served as a
showcase of success. It is hoped that this initiative and the recognition afforded will inspire other
women to strive to achieve more in their own endeavours.
