THE Premier of KwaZulu-Natal, Mr. Willies Mchunu and the Transport, Community Safety and Liaison MEC, Mr. Mxolisi Kaunda, have convened a two-day KwaZulu-Natala Crime Summit to horn out plans and produce tangible solutions to the challenge of crime in the province.

This high-level forum will be addressed by, among others, Minister of Police, Mr. Nathi Nhleko, Premier Mchunu and MEC Kaunda.

Other speakers of note include, Dr Johan Burger: Institute for Global Security Studies who will provide an input on Global, National and Local Crime Trend Analysis while Justice Essa Moosa: Director for Priority Crime Investigations will reflect on Improving the Effectiveness of Criminal Justice System.

There will be these and more speakers to reflect on the challenges of crime and proposed tangible solutions.

Briefly, this crime summit is seen as a vehicle to â€"
a) Identify the fundamental causes of criminality and mobilise state and non-state capacities and resources at all levels to address same, including citizenry involvement and co-responsibilities;

b) Devise and agree on effective and coordinated responses required by all government agencies and partners to reduce fear of crime and enhance the protection of vulnerable groups especially women, children and rural communities;
c) Analyse the Province’s most persistent and intractable safety and security challenges; and

d) Develop means to respond to those challenges in an integrated and sustainable manner, with coordinated activity across a variety of State agencies, the private sector and our communities.

The Summit, which will be attended by all key stakeholders in the fight against crime, will also break into commissions.

Among others, these Commissions will focus on Provincial Joints, Case Flow Management, The Economic and Social Costs of Crime, Combating Cyber-Crime and White Collar Crime, Reducing Fraud and Corruption: How Far Has KZN Come.
