Golf was an interesting sport at the SALGA games next to soccer, rugby and tennis which are all team sports, golf being more of a personal single player sport had a far more relaxed atmosphere. Winsor Park golf course was full of players, supporters and counsellors who showed up to partake and support the different districts. Andile Nene, sixteen year old golfer from Tugela district was moseying around the golf course showing off his impressive swing. He got into golf through his friends and loves it about any other sport. "It is a sport about personal gain and achievement" he said. When asked about who kept score he said "the players keep their own scores," he assured me that there was no cheating involved and that all the players were trustworthy to be honest about their scores. He was particularly impressed with their uniforms and happy that they did not have to wear them on the golf course if they were more comfortable in their normal everyday clothes. This was the beauty of golf for Andile that he did not have to conform to anything, he played a sport that he was comfortable in and that made him happy. He was chuffed at his scores so far and expects to do well overall in the competition. He ended off his interview recommending golf to any other young people in KZN and South Africa saying; "golf instils principles of patience, honesty, and respect" which are all important aspects for everyday life.\ Kendal Quicke, Sam Mgobozi For more information contact Gayle McLennan-Smith (SALGA KZN) e-mail: gayle@salgakzn.net www.salgakzn.net Tel 031 2671977 or 083 6530465 Visit Facebook for photos Add Comment |
