Chemical Specialities Limited was started by Peter Dykins in Durban in 1957. This originally family owned business has grown to be a significant force in the South African market, as an exporter, and currently employs in excess of 1,000 people worldwide.This growth was the result of the management team's inspiration for innovation and constant striving to produce products that give customers added value, and to become a leading global paint company.
Truly Empowered
A management buyout, effective from 1 January 2006, resulted in the company becoming truly empowered through the introduction of BEE shareholding in the business.The management buyout was financed by RMB Corvest (Proprietary) Limited, a wholly-owned subsidiary of FirstRand Bank Holdings Limited and Tandem Capital (Proprietary) Limited, an empowerment investment group owned by RMB Corvest (Proprietary) Limited.
Chemical Specialities converted from a private company to a public company on 22 October 2007, and was listed on the JSE AltX on 6 November 2007.

Decorative
Developed by using the very latest pigment technologies, the DeCO™ Signature Range represents the best value for money, in a competitive market. The DeCO™ collection includes 35 types of paint ranging from specialist undercoats and preparation products to enamel paints, wall coatings and roof paints.The DeCO™ range of paints is supported by a range of DeCO™ accessories - sugar soap, crackfiller, woodfillers and other widely used products.
Industrial
A wide range of air-dry paints and coatings are manufactured,which offer superior performance and cost-effectiveness and continue to dominate in their sectors.
Chemspec is the leading supplier of stains and wood finish products to the South African furniture manufacturing industry, with an estimated market share in the region of 75%.
Automotive
The flagship refinishing range,Metalux 2™, offers a full range of truly South African automotive products. Featuring state-of-the-art technology,Metalux 2™enables any colour to be accuratelymatched. The compact collection of toners achieves over
140 000 colours which means a smaller stockholding for the bodyshop. The unparalleled combination of performance excellence, colour tools, support, and affordability has positioned this range as a new global player in automotive refinishing.
Transocean Coatings
Transocean Coatings develops, manufactures and sells antifoulings, anticorrosives and manymore coatings for ships,offshore installations, industrial facilities and yachts. Recently,Transocean member companies approved ChemSpec as a full member of the Association.ChemSpec is now able to expand business to the marine, yacht and protective coatings market in South Africa and neighbouring countries.
Retail
ChemSpec retails its products through its House of Paint stores. There are 29 House of Paint retail outlets, of which 8 are franchised stores, located in South Africa, Botswana and Namibia. The company is in the process of expanding its retail presence in Africa through the development of a solid franchising model.
Safety, Health and Environment
In terms of the environment,ChemSpec is committed to producing products that comply with international VOC (volatile organic compound) legislation. The company prides itself in the fact that all decorative paint products are lead free and safe to use.
Staff Training
ChemSpec introduced major training initiatives with the focus of training being broad-based, ranging from Occupational Health and Safety;FirstAid;FireMarshall training; forklift supervisory/management; sales skills and paint and coating technology. Study assistance programmes also facilitate the development of staff with initiative and drive. Every effort is being made to support these employees who are in fact the company’s future. The company also ensures that training courses are National Qualifications Framework accredited and that service providers are BEE compliant.The company target is to dedicate 3% of its annual payroll towards training.
Social Responsibility
Since 2007, the House of Paint has partnered with the Durban University of Technology Architectural Technology and Interior Design Department’s annual third year project whereby the students select a disadvantaged organisation in need of an interior makeover and then design and implement the makeover over a six month period. In 2007, the St. Martin’s Diocesan Home for Children was revamped and the project for 2008 isWylie House, a home for abused and traumatised children in Durban.
For many years ChemSpec has been the leading sponsors of the ChemSpec Jaguars Rugby Club, an empowerment rugby club based in Sydenham, a previously disadvantaged area. ChemSpec is also the official paint supplier to the ABSA Stadium, home of the Sharks Rugby team. Other events that carry the ChemSpec brand include the House of Paint Durban Airshow, which impacts the regional economy with an estimated R18 million to R25 million, the House of Paint Easter Rugby Festival, the House of Paint 50 Miler, the House of Paint Ozzie Gladwin, ChemSpec Durban Surfing and the ChemSpec Captain’sTable Rugby Banquets. ChemSpec are also the title sponsor of club rugby and the Moor Cup in KZN. The Company also sponsors KZN’s first and only continental cycling outfit, Team House of Paint. In January 2008, the team was re-launched sporting brand new riding gear and an additional four riders.
