Description of Products/ Services:
While Safmarine has been widely acknowledged as a north-south trade and Africa specialist, the line is fast expanding its services into the east-west trade lanes. Safmarine is currently active on more than 18 trade lanes and plans are underway to expand the shipping services, in response to customer needs. Safmarine has a significant presence in a number of the world's fastest growing markets, including China and India. Safmarine's liner services offer direct calls to a wide range of ports on the core services and all trade lanes link with each other to offer through carriage across the globe. Safmarine offers a wide range of e-commerce services providing 24/7 access to the entire shipping process on-line.
Fleet
Not only is the current fleet equipped to handle a full range of commodities, but Safmarine has, and continues to, invest in new, purpose-built vessels to ensure future needs for vessel capacity are met. The fleet management team and technical staff professionally service more than 40 owned and chartered ships, with a combined nominal capacity in excess of 70 000 teu (twenty foot/six metre equivalent units).
All vessels have been built to specification, in line with ISO 14001 approval standards. Safmarine, in accordance with Group standards and through its fleet renewal programme, is committed to:
-
A reduction in fuel consumption and exhaust omission by deploying the technologically most advanced engines in each vessel class,
-
Improved efficiencies in ballast water changes and use of separator tanks and oil water filters,
-
Use of vessel coatings using lead-free paint,
-
Realistic, attainable improvements in environmental standards through planning and investment.
Target Markets
Safmarine has grown significantly since its formation in South Africa more than 60 years ago - today the shipping line is represented in 120 countries throughout the world. Its customers are drawn from the world's most well-known and respected companies who see benefit in using Safmar ine's expertise when shipping a wide range of cargo - from refrigerated and automotive cargo to commodities such as coffee and tea and out of gauge items such as large pipes and equipment for oil and gas exploration.
A Shipping Line with a Conscience
In the early 1990s Safmarine launched its award-winning "Containers in the Community", Corporate Social Investment Programme which involves the reuse of containers retired from the Safmarine fleet. With the world container fleet set to grow substantially, the Company recognized the importance of re-using a portion of its ever-growing fleet in an innovative, environmentally-friendly and sustainable way. To date Safmarine has deployed in excess of 8 000 retired sea freight containers representing 2 000 diverse projects in previously disadvantaged communities throughout South Africa.
Education is the main focus of the Corporate Social Investment programme.
Projects in KwaZulu-Natal include:
-
Marianhill Primary School Computer Lab
-
Ntathakusa School classrooms, Winterton
-
Valley Trust- Safmarine revamped the multipurpose centre in the Valley of a Thousand Hills
-
Agape centre, Hillcrest - Safmarine converted six containers to accommodate 80 children who were orphaned through Aids, as well as abandoned children.
The A.P.Moller - Maersk Group has also been instrumental in creating two organisations which provide maritime education and in the process generating awareness and interest in the maritime industry. This education has been particularly important for poorer communities which in the past would have had limited access to training and jobs in the maritime and transport sector. One of these is the Maritime Studies Department at Simon's Town School which developed the curriculum for maritime studies up to matriculation, now accredited by the national Department of Education. The other is the South African Maritime Academy (SAMTRA) which offers advanced maritime training for qualified sea personnel.
