With a national network of franchised stores, TALISMAN is leading the market with the most successful business system in the industry. The first Talisman Plant & Tool Hire Franchise was opened in Centurion, Pretoria in 1998. Since then, many successful franchises have been established throughout South Africa. Talisman can boast that its KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) stores are in the top two non-operated, small plant rental companies in the province. All quality procedures and product choices are controlled by the head office in Pretoria to ensure standardisation of service offering to a discerning industry.

According to company director Colin du Plessis, the company subscribes to ISO14000 environmental standards and certification for all product items used throughout the franchise operations. "We have very stringent standards as far as product compliance and quality is concerned..."

Du Plessis pointed out that in terms of B-BBEE ratings each franchisee is responsible for attaining individual certification for his operation. To date, all stores in the KZN area have attained a Level 4 certification.

Ernest Jonck, who owns the Durban South store, said that the company has donated funds and equipment to support community security and school projects. "We are regularly approached by organisations that require some form of support and we have to date been very involved in upliftment of our local communities."

Both Kevin Mackridge and Andrew Cox (owners of the Pinetown and Ballito stores), together with Ernest and Jona Jonck (owners of Talisman Durban South), and Brendan and Sonja Ferrar (owners of Talisman Umhlanga), are involved in similar community upliftment projects and have donated the use of their equipment to upgrade endeavours in the surrounding communities.

Du Plessis added that Talisman Franchise Operations (Head Office) is investigating the formulation of a bursary fund for students in the civil engineering, architectural and quantity surveying fields. "We are still in the embryonic stages with the project and need to identify the selection criteria and the extent
of the bursary investment."

With regard to training, Talisman Franchise Operations provides comprehensive business skills courses to each new franchisee to ensure that all stores operate on an identical business model. Ongoing education is provided in the form of externally sourced courses on subjects such as finance, as well as internally driven courses on technical matters.

On a franchisee level, each store receives product-specific training from suppliers and also personally provides access to external courses on subjects such as time management and sales management.

Du Plessis is supported by his KZN franchisees in the view that the company and its stores have contributed positively to the KZN economy through the creation of jobs, investment in the local supply chain, support of infrastructural development (with specific emphasis of late on the stadia and King Shaka Airport), and skills transfer. "Going forward, we have established a comprehensive footprint in the central and northern reaches of KZN but we are open to the possibility of establishing a store down on the South Coast, should the 'right' person come along," Du Plessis concluded.
