KwaZulu-Natalcovers an area of 94 361km2 â€" about the size of Portugal. It’s one of South Africa’s most popular tourist destinations. Also known as ‘The Garden Province’, it’s home to flourishing green valleys. Its capital is Pietermaritzburg.

The population numbers 10.6 million and the principal language (in the rural areas) is isiZulu, followed by English and Afrikaans. English remains the business language. The region has a rich cultural diversity that springs from the influences of British colonialism mixed with Zulu, Indian and Afrikaans traditions.

The region contributes approximately 16% of the country’s GDP, of which the largest industries are agriculture, forestry and fishing, followed by transport, storage and communication.

Durban’s harbour is one of the largest in the world and the busiest in South Africa. It handles about 30 million tons of cargo valued in excess of R100 billion annually. Together with the port at RichardsBay, the province of KwaZulu-Natal accounts for nearly 78% of South Africa’s cargo tonnage.

Globally, Durban remains one of the urban areas that continue to grow at a phenomenal rate. The region has more than 2.5 million m2 of enclosed retail space, of which the biggest is Gateway Theatre of Shopping (158 319m2), followed by The Pavilion (119 182m2) and Galleria Shopping Centre (84 536m2).Prime high street space is limited to the Durban city centre.

Shopping centre rentals in the area have remained stable since the first quarter of 2010.
