eThekwini Maritime Cluster African Woman anchor themselves in the maritime sector

2012-08-31

As at Monday 27 August 2012

Women on the African continent have made significant strides into the maritime sector, not only as executives and managers; but also in the operational areas. This is evident in the burgeoning number of women who are making a mark in the port as marine pilots and engineers.

The further development of integration of women into the maritime industry will be addressed during the 3rd African Women in Shipping Conference, a joint initiative of the KZN Department of Economic Development and Tourism (DEDT) and the Women’s International Shipping and Trading Association (WISTA); supported by the eThekwini Maritime Cluster (EMC). The conference will be held in Durban at the Southern Sun Elangeni Hotel, from Monday the 27th to Wednesday the 29th of August 2012.

“WISTA aims to support the development of more female owned maritime enterprises and to encourage the development of a highly skilled sector that is equally representative of both genders”, says Fiona Calitz President of WISTA South Africa and Director at Mainport Africa Shipping.

The first day of the conference will look at discussing best practise and policy issues, with the second day centred on local and international education and training opportunities. Young women from tertiary institutions and high schools will attend the conference, in which the South African Maritime Authority (SAMSA), eThekwini Municipality, the Durban Chamber of Commerce and Transnet are proud partners.

On the 15th of August during the WISTA women’s breakfast the new SA board committee was elected.
