eThekwini Municipality - DURBAN TAKES CENTRE STAGE AT UN ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL COUNCIL2015-03-30 EThekwini Deputy Mayor, Cllr Nomvuzo Shabalala, will take part in an in-depth panel discussion, focusing on the strategies being implemented at local and sectoral levels to tackle sustainable development challenges with decent work solutions.
Shabalala, who is currently in New York City, with City Manager, Sibusiso Sithole, will respond to a set of questions during a panel session when the three-day Integration Segment of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) begins tomorrow, 30/03/2015. The conference will be taking place at the United Nations Headquarters, ECOSOC Chamber. The focus of the conference is “Achieving sustainable development through employment creation and decent work for all.†According to the ECOSOC report between 40 to 80 percent of the real economy in many developing countries is comprised of workers in the informal economy. Shabalala and three other panelists will discuss practical policy initiatives and approaches that can help facilitate the transition from informal to formal employment. “This conference will also enable us to provide input into the global development agenda leading up to the United Nations Conference on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development taking place in Quito, Ecuador, in October 2016,†said Shabalala. Shabalala added that the Municipality is regarded as an innovative world class city and that the recent international Mercer survey which concluded that Durban is the top South African city with the highest quality of life, attest to the efficacy of the Municipality’s programme of action. “We are aware of the challenges hampering the pace of development, however we also have plans to mitigate those challenges. These plans are outlined in the Municipality’s Integrated Development Plan, that has been developed to improve the lives of the people in eThekwini,†said Shabalala. On Tuesday, 31/03/2015, Minister for Economic Development Ebrahim Patel and three other panelists will be discussing policies aimed at translating sustained economic growth with broad-based and job creation outcomes to generate inclusive sustainable development. According to the African Union’s transformative Agenda 2063, African economies will create shared growth, decent jobs and economic opportunities for all.
