eThekwini Municipality - PREPARING DURBAN FOR A SOLAR PV FUTURE

2015-04-21

The eThekwini Municipality in partnership with the British High Commission and the KwaZulu-Natal Sustainable Energy Forum (KSEF) will be launching the Durban Solar City Framework programme aimed at preparing Durban for a Solar PV Future. The Municipality's Energy Office, in its mandate to mitigate climate change impacts and promote the use of renewable sources of energy, has drafted the Durban Solar City Framework to plan a way forward for Solar PV in Durban.

It aims to provide an overview of key Solar PV initiatives that will benefit the city and its residents. The Durban Solar City Framework promotes Solar PV as both an emerging sector of the local economy and as a contributor to energy supply in Durban.

To lead by example, Solar PV panels will soon be installed in several identified municipal buildings. These include the iconic Moses Mabhida Stadium, uShaka Marine World and the Kings Park Swimming Pool. The Solar PV systems will reduce the reliance on fossil fuels and create a sustainable energy future through the use of solar technologies. These systems will help Municipality to get first-hand experience in understanding challenges and benefits to Solar PV rooftop systems' design, installation and management.

The event will take place as follows:
