2015-07-29

It’s all systems go and Durban is once again ready to stage the much anticipated U19 International Football developmental tournament at the various stadia around the City.

The second edition of the Durban U19 International Football Tournament will begin on Wednesday, 29 July 2015 at King Zwelithini Stadium in Umlazi.

The tournament was staged for the first time in Durban and South Africa in 2014.

International teams participating in the tournament include English giants Arsenal FC, Italian masters of football, AC Milan, PSV Eindhoven from Holland, Turkey’s Galatasary, Celtic FC of Scotland and Germany’s VfB Stuttgart. The home teams that will fly the South African flag are the KZN Academy X1 and the SAFA National U19 Team.Galatasary and the KZN Academy XI are already in the City to prepare for the tournament. The rest of the teams are expected to land at the King Shaka International Airport today, 28 July 2015 at 16:45.

EThekwini Mayor Cllr James Nxumalo said the City was proud to host six international club sides who will be competing against the best South Africa has to offer in the under 19 football age group.

“This platform will give young local players an opportunity to play against some of the most talented young players from the world’s best known clubs over 10 days. This is a very important tournament as it is from the under 19 age groups where coaches will begin to look in order to identify new talent for the national team,” said Nxumalo.

All four playing venues have been adequately prepared to host the six international teams and two South African teams.

All matches of the Durban U19 Football Tournament will be broadcast live on SuperSport from 29 July to 8 August 2015.

Entry to all the matches is free. On match days, students dressed in school uniform and travelling to the various stadia to watch matches will be allowed to board all Metrorail trains, free of charge.
