eThekwini Municipality - CREATING OPPORTUNITIES FOR WOMEN TO SUCCEED IN BUSINESS

2015-08-05

To ensure women inclusion in the economic cycle, eThekwini Municipality has invested more than R20 million over the past eight years in business opportunities for women, resulting into the creation of hundreds of jobs.

Research shows that the empowering women is critical to eradicating poverty and accelerating global development.

As part of our comprehensive women empowerment programme, the Municipality will host the 9th Women Economic Empowerment Conference on 06 August 2015 at Inkosi Albert Luthulu International Convention Centre under the theme “Enhancing the Economic Empowerment of Women”.

The conference will focus on various topics including how women can access economic opportunities and the available economic opportunities for women across the board but more especially in male dominated sectors in order to ensure gender equality.

Deputy Mayor Nomvuzo Shabalala said: “Empowering women is imperative to improve their representation and participation in business and to achieve this, the Municipality developed a programme that will ensure that women take advantage of the opportunities available to transform and grow their businesses.”

Shabalala said the conference will provide valuable insight on how women can sustain their businesses and be involved in addressing challenges facing the City.

Prominent speakers include Deputy Minister of Public Service and Administration Ayanda Dlodlo, Khanyi Dhlomo of Ndalo Media Group and Destiny Magazine Editor, Zeona Jacobs who is a Director of Corporate Affairs at Johannesburg Stock Exchange, Hlengiwe Makhathini of National Empowerment Fund, Zandi Mbele of International Business Machines Corporation and many more.

The guest speakers will share the stage and discuss available opportunities within their respective sectors and how women in business can access those opportunities. They will also advise women in business on how they can become successful entrepreneurs.

“As the City we are committed to ensuring that women owned businesses grow from strength to strength through such programmes and create employment,” added Shabalala.
