eThekwini Municipality - COMMITTEE RECOMMENDS TWO EVENTS TO BE HOSTED IN THE CITY TO BOOST TOURISM

2016-03-10

The Economic Development and Planning Committee has recommended two major events to be hosted in the City in the coming weeks.

This includes the partnership to host Durban Picnic Day which will be held over the Easter Weekend and for two international artists, namely TI and Nicky Minaj, to perform in the City.

The recommendations still have to go before the Executive Committee for approval.

The Economic Development and Planning Committee was told that both events would have a return on investment in the City. They would stimulate a lot of foot traffic as not only locals attend such shows but people from outside the City who would spend at restaurants, accommodation and participate in other activities in the City.

Another added benefit was job creation, with infrastructure work sourced locally for events as well as temporary work.

With international events there was an added benefit of brand awareness of the City on the global stage.

These events are in line with the Durban Visitors Strategy of taking Durban to the world and will lay a platform for the City to expand the footprint of Brand Durban.

With tickets for Nicki Minaj Johannesburg leg sold out, a number of fans would be travelling to Durban to attend the show which will have a positive impact on the local economy, the Committee heard.

The Durban Picnic Day is a family oriented event and provides an exciting tourism experience for visitors and locals during the Easter weekend. The line-up includes various well known national artists who will share the stage with local entertainers. The inaugural event was hosted last year, and the aim is attract over attract 8 000 people across the demographics this year.

Both events are part of the broader strategy to boost the image and, consequently, the economy of eThekwini.

The Committee approved the partnership between Link Gibson for the International Artists Durban Music Tour. TI will perform at the Durban Botanical Gardens, while Nicki Minaj's Durban leg of her South African Tour will take place at the Moses Mabhida Stadium.

Deputy Mayor and chairperson of the Economic Development and Planning Committee Nomvuzo Shabalala said the City has been marketed both nationally and internationally on numerous platforms.

“That is why we were voted one of the seven wonder cities of the world. It is not the first time we have fund events to be held in the City. We must be doing something right if we are getting all these accolades as a City. We are doing our job as the committee to bring all these events to the City,” she said.

A third report tabled before the Committee regarding a networking trip to Australia for City officials was referred back to the relevant department for the report to be reworked and clearly outline the purpose of the visit and the desired goals. At an Executive Meeting meeting on Tuesday, 8 March 2016, Mayor James Nxumalo, had emphasised that any trip taken must be of benefit to the City.
