eThekwini Municipality - ELEVEN AREAS TO BENEFIT FROM MASSIVE ELECTRICITY BOLSTERING PROJECT TOTALLING OVER R31 MILLION RSS eThekwini Municipality - ELEVEN AREAS TO BENEFIT FROM MASSIVE ELECTRICITY BOLSTERING PROJECT TOTALLING OVER R31 MILLION2016-07-01 To accelerate the roll-out of electricity supply as well as cater for growth and new connections, the Executive Committee has approved funding to the tune of over R31 million for electricity infrastructure in various areas across the City.
The project will include construction and commissioning of distributor sub-station, reinforcement of the existing medium voltage reticulation system, installation of new brick sub-station, replacement of switchgear and installation of medium voltage cables and many more. Areas that will benefit from this massive project include Mayville, Verulam, uThongathi, Kennedy Road Transit Camp, Clare Hills, Reservoir Hills, Westville South, Kloof and other areas within the Durban Central Business District. Currently, eThekwini Municipality provides electricity services to more than 700 000 customers within the City and surrounding areas. Councillor Nigel Gumede, Chairperson of the Human Settlement and Infrastructure Committee said this infrastructure upgrade is critical as it acts as a response to the City’s Integrated Development Plan to cater for future developments. CITY APPROVES R10 MILLION TO REPLACE AND UPGRADE DISASTER MANAGEMENT AND EMERGECY CONTROL CRITICAL SYSTEMS To continue working as a Smarter City and effectively render services to communities, the Executive committee has approved a report to set aside approximately R10 million to replace and upgrade the City’s Disaster Management and Emergency Control Unit Call Manager and Integrated systems. Deputy City Manager, in the Emergency and Community Services Cluster Dr Musa Gumede said: “The call manager is a server or contact centre software that enables the emergency communications centre to take calls from the public to process all emergencies. The system allows for intelligent routing and links to all emergency services.†He added that this system is vital to enable the City to speedily assist residents in distress and to prevent possible loss of lives. Gumede said the Municipality started utilising this innovative technology about eight years ago. The system, he said, was beneficial, adding that other Departments within the Municipality also utilise it. R1.5 MILLION SET ASIDE TO CONNECT SEWERS TO EXISTING HOUSES To avoid high amount of pollution in the Cato Crest area, the Municipality’s Executive Committee (EXCO) has given the authority to advertise seven contracts to install the sewer wet core in existing houses in the area. According to the tabled before EXCO today, 29 June, some of the occupied houses do not have connections to the water borne sewer in the area. These houses have water connections and are currently using flush toilets. In his budget speech delivered on 31 May, Mayor James Nxumalo said: “We must never again build houses without services no matter how pressing the circumstances may be.†Through this project, the Municipality seeks to address such challenges as some of the houses in the Cato Crest area were completed without the required infrastructure. Chairperson of the Human Settlement and Infrastructure Committee, Cllr Nigel Gumede, welcomed the move. The approximate time expected to complete the work on site is three months. PROPOSAL FOR CITY’S PARKS, RECREATION AND CULTURE UNIT TO BE CUSTODIANS OF GRASS CUTTING SERVICES To provide eThekwini residents with more comprehensive grass cutting, weeding and garden services, the City’s Parks, Recreation and Culture Unit request to centralise these services has been approved. Currently the basic grass cutting service is undertaken by six various City and Provincial Departments as well as appointed Co-operatives who are employed to provide supplementary back-up services. Deputy City Manager for Emergency and Community Services Cluster Dr Musa Gumede said: “This has been long overdue. This will enable the City to be in a position to respond to queries and ensure consistency with regards to standards and direct frequencies when it comes to providing the service. This will ensure a one-stop-shop approach to the maintenance of the unmaintained road verges, main suburbs, arterial roads and Municipal facilities.†The Parks, Recreation and Culture Unit was mandated to engage in further discussions with relevant Council Departments and Provincial Transport Authority to finalise the matter.
