EThekwini Mayor unveils state of the art taxi rank

2017-10-06

Mayor Zandile Gumede officially opened a newly-built Cartwright taxi rank along Charlotte Maxeke.

This is part of the City’s Transport Month programmes.

Speaking at the official opening, Mayor said the taxi rank will bring back dignity to the commuters as.

She said the R13million taxi rank boasts modern design with dedicated ablutions for people with disabilities, baby nappy changing facilities, vehicle washing bays stalls which will house small business vendors.

The entire rank is secured by fencing with lockable sliding gates and tarred floors.

During the construction, over R600 000 was spent on sub-contractors to ensure the SMME development and local economic development in line with radical economic transformation principles.

Job opportunities for local people were created to ensure local economic empowerment and job creation.

Mayor Gumede urged operators and all people who will be using the rank to take pride and ownership of the multi-million rand facility and take care of it.

“Rank users and the public at large need to safeguard this rank and all other municipal public facilities from vandalism. The City is incurring billions of rands to fix and repair vandalized facilities and this takes us back and limit our ability to invest and provide new facilities that are in need of facilities in all the 110 wards of our municipalities”, she said.
