eThekwini Lauded For Hosting Sterling 2017 AFUS Conference2017-11-03 The second Africa Forum for Urban Safety (AFUS) Learning Exchange Conference was hailed a resounding success following three days of strategic planning sessions working towards creating safer cities for all. The conference was held at the Moses Mabhida Stadium from 1 to 3 November.
Chairperson of AFUS and Mayor of eThekwini Municipality Zandile Gumede committed to three key actions that needs to be implemented moving forward. She committed to the implementation of eThekwini Safety Audit as a project to develop the urban safety monitoring framework to support African cities and local governments through AFUS. “We also committed to the development and delivery of relevant and appropriate urban safety curriculum content in support of local governments and strategic partners. It is also important that we establish a special purpose mechanism to allow AFUS to mobilise resources to support the implementation of the AFUS Strategic Agenda 2015-2025,†said Mayor Gumede. She added that it is vital that women play a meaningful and strategic role in driving this agenda. “It is for this reason that we further commit that the 2018 Learning Exchange will focus on women safety in African cities and that it should take place during the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children.†Chairperson of AFUS Advisory Council, Dr Alioune Badiane applauded eThekwini Municipality for its continuous commitment, involvement and participation towards creating safer cities for all. “We are happy that our Technical Advisory Council has been expanded to include a reference group from South Africa. This Council will be in charge of quality control and making sure that the work of AFUS is on track. They will also advise the Chair of AFUS accordingly. We are now preparing for the next Learning Exchange Conference of which the focus will be on the safety and security of women in Africa,†said Badiane. “We regard this decision as a huge milestone as the safety and security of women is a global challenge. The Learning Exchange Conference will explore the challenges faced by women in ordinary situations and women in post-conflict situations,†added Badiane. In February next year, Mayor Gumede will represent Africa in the World Urban Forum in Kuala Lumpur where she will present the Durban declaration.
