eThekwini Municipality - The Human Settlements and Infrastructure Committee Decisions2017-11-08 The Human Settlements and Infrastructure Committee held its last meeting yesterday, 07 November 2017. The following items were supported and recommended to the Executive Committee for final approval.
INCREASE OF CAPACITY TO ATHLONE PARK WATER TOWER IN WARD 93 The Committee has approved that the Water and Sanitation Unit can demolish the existing 50KL reinforced concrete elevated tower in Ward 93 which is showing signs of structural deterioration. The tower can no longer meet the minimum water pressure requirements. The 50KL will be demolished and a new 100KL reinforced concrete reservoir will be constructed. The construction of the reservoir is scheduled to start in the 2017/18 financial year. ELECTRIFICATION ROLL-OUT PLAN The electrification roll-out plan for the 2017/18 financially year was agreed upon in the Committee. About 19 500 electricity connections will be considered for electrification. This includes informal settlements, low-cost houses, transit camps and rural connections. Council is installing 20Amps supply to all informal settlements and rural areas at no cost to the customers. Customers within an informal settlement are able to collect Free Basic Electricity (FBE) on a monthly basis. Customers that consume less than 150kWh per month on average will receive the first 65kWh free. The free portion is allocated via an automated online prepayment vending system. CITY PARTNERING WITH THE KUISHI PROGRAMME The Committee approved the partnership between the City and the Kuishi Programme. Kuishi is a three-year programme initiated by NGOs which aims to introduce sustainable consumption and production patterns into building material supply chains and built environment services. This will be provided to large scale government housing programmes in Ethiopia and eThekwini Municipality. The partnership will assist in making it a requirement to use more sustainable building technologies and architectural designs integrated into regulatory framework of social housing programmes. ENDS.
