eThekwini Shines at Premier’s Awards

The eThekwini Municipality once again shined when it was awarded a Certificate of Commendation at the recent Premier’s Awards for Excellence held at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre.

The eThekwini Water and Sanitation Unit’s Debt Relief Programme was one of the three finalists vying for the Gold award. The programme aims to alleviate household debts of 90days or more where owners are not able to pay. The value of the house must be less than R250 000, in some instances child headed households or pensioners without any income also qualify.

KwaZulu-Natal Premier, Dr Zweli Mkhize, explained that the awards are aimed at recognising things that civil servants do. “Civil servants must be aware that if you do good, don’t do it because people are watching you, but because you are supposed to be providing the best service. We must realise that it is not a job, but a service.” He also touched on corruption. “Look after the resources in your care. Police yourselves. We must all come to a stage where we do not need to have people policing us, let’s do it right because it’s how we operate.”

EThekwini Mayor James Nxumalo said that he is pleased with the recognition given to the Municipality and this is just another feather in the cap amongst all the other awards and accolades that the city has achieved. “We are doing exceptionally well. We must make sure that we continue to put people first as guided by the Batho Pele Principles.

Our priority is to serve the people the best way we can. We continue to lead and I am proud of what we have achieved thus far and we will surely win more.” The winner of the Gold Award was Manguzi Hospital, under the umbrella of the Department of Health. The hospital CEO Dr Sipho Vumese said. “We are very excited as we did not expect this. We come from a rural area and this award really puts us on the map.”
