AUSTRIA

Austrian scholarships are available for students, teachers and researchers in southern Africa.

The Summer University of Vienna offers an international summer study programme, including European Studies and German language courses, for students from all over the world.

Tourism and Hotel Management: The Austrian Development Agency offers scholarships to students from developing countries every year. Please be aware that scholarships are competitive and are awarded after a careful selection process by the Austrian Development Agency and the Institute of Tourism and Hotel Management

BELGIUM

These grants offer the possibility increase their professional competencies and capacities through university (master and doctorate) studies or through internships and travel trips. These opportunities are offered in the country of origin, in other partner countries or in Belgium.

FRANCE

The Embassy of France allocates around 20 Master scholarships per year for the duration of one French academic year, renewable once. They include the tuition fees, the Schengen visa fees, a monthly stipend towards living expenses, health insurance and the flight tickets. The French Embassy also offers PhD scholarships. The applications for PhD research grants is open permanently.

GERMANY

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) provides scholarships in Germany for international
students for a range of postgraduate courses at German universities, which aim at providing academically educated young professionals from developing countries with further specialised studies.

GREECE

The Greek Government offers scholarships per year to South African students for tertiary education studies in Greece. Most of these scholarships are given to students from the less privileged sectors of the South African society. Students can apply for these scholarships through the Greek embassy.

HUNGARY

The Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship Programme was launched in 2013 by the Hungarian Government. The core mission of the programme is to increase the number of foreign students in Hungary and to encourage Hungarian higher education institutions to attract top foreign students.

The programme is based on bilateral educational cooperation agreements signed between the Ministries responsible for education in the sending countries/territories and Hungary or between institutions.

In the academic year 2017/2018 approximately 4000 students can begin their studies in Hungary in the framework of the Stipendium Hungaricum Programme.

Type of scholarships: Undergraduate and post graduate

ITALY

Italian government scholarships are open to both foreign and Italian citizens resident abroad (IRE) for studying in Italy. The aim of these scholarships is to foster international cultural cooperation, spread the knowledge of the Italian language, culture and science, as well as promote the Italian economic and technological system throughout the world.

Type of scholarships:
  • Second-level university courses (five-year degree/Master of Science)
  • Master’s Degree courses (First and Second Level)
  • Ph.D Courses
  • Specialisation Schools
  • Research under academic supervision
Courses
  • Higher Education in Arts, Music and Dance
  • Italian language and culture
  • Training/refresher courses for Teachers of Italian language
Candidates shall submit a certificate showing their knowledge and proficiency in the Italian language, starting from the B2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) The knowledge of the Italian language is not required for enrolling in the university courses fully provided in English.

NETHERLANDS

The Netherlands Fellowship Programmes (NFP) promote capacity building within organisations in 51 countries by providing fellowships for training and education for professionals. The NFP is initiated and fully funded by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs from the budget for development cooperation.

RUSSIA

The Russian Government offers scholarships for South African students to study at Russian institutions

Most programmes are instructed in the Russian language and applicants with no command of Russian are required to take the college preparatory courses for one year before pursuing major studies. Only after passing the examinations of the college preparatory course can they start their degree studies.

The scholarship may be awarded for undergraduate (Bachelors) or postgraduate (Masters or PhD) studies. Preference is given to postgraduate applications.

Applicants are required to do their own research into available programmes, institutions and programmespecific entrance criteria. The programmes and institutions available under this scholarship are listed at www.russia.study

SWITZERLAND

Each year the Swiss Confederation awards Government Excellence Scholarships to promote international exchange and research cooperation between Switzerland and over 180 other countries. Recipients are selected by the awarding body, the Federal Commission for Scholarships for Foreign Students (FCS).

Scholarships for the 2018â€"19 academic year will be advertised online from August 2017.

Types of Scholarship

The Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships are aimed at young researchers from abroad who have completed a master’s degree or PhD

The research scholarship is available to post-graduate researchers in any discipline (who hold a master’s degree as a minimum) who are planning to come to Switzerland to pursue research or further studies at doctoral or post-doctoral level. Research scholarships are awarded for research or study at all Swiss cantonal universities, universities of applied sciences and the two federal institutes of technology.

Only candidates nominated by an academic mentor at one of these higher education institutions will
be considered.
