ADDITIONAL PROGRAMMES OF THE BRITISH COUNCIL

FameLab 2018

It’s been dubbed the “Pop Idols” of science, FameLab strengthens science engagement, taking South
African science to the world.

FameLab is an initiative of Cheltenham Science Festivals and is an international competition that promotes engagement with science, technology, engineering, mathematics and innovation. It is implemented in over 30 countries, including most recently, Brazil, Thailand, Qatar and Kazakhstan.

FameLab provides a platform for audience engagement and creates space for scientists to find their voices and develop their communication skills.

FameLab is a call to early career researchers between the ages of 21 to 35 to enter the competition in order to hone their science communication skills. They present a science topic to a panel of expert judges in three minutes. These presentations have to be entertaining, original and scientifically accurate while being accessible to a public audience.

FameLab South Africa is implemented in partnership between the British Council, the South African Agency for Science and Technology Advancement (SAASTA), and Jive Media Africa.

The public (open) heats will be held at set dates around the country. For participants living far from a heat, a video entry option is available. Selected participants will be awarded travel costs to attend a
public heat.

Premier Skills

The British Council is delighted to bring back the hugely successful Premier Skills programme to South
Africa in 2017. Premier Skills is a partnership between the Premier League and the British Council, which uses football as a tool to engage with and develop the skills of young people. Drawing upon the Premier Leagues’ domestic expertise, it uses football to tackle a variety of social issues in the community, such as health, disability, gender, inclusion and education.

Premier Skills has already delivered tremendous impact in 21 countries across Asia, Africa and the Americas. Since 2007, it has created training opportunities benefitting 2,300 grassroots coaches and referees who in turn have reached more than 400,000 young people. Working closely with the South African government, NGOs and local community partners, Premier Skills aims to reach grassroots football coaches from across all nine provinces. These coaches will receive face-to-face training, using highly skilled coaches and referee trainers from the Premier League and its clubs. They are then supported in developing their own community football projects.

The expert training that prospective young coaches and referees receive through Premier Skills will also help the long- term health of football in South Africa.

COSY (Creating Opportunity for South Africa’s Youth)

COSY aims to enable young people, particularly young women, in rural and semirural areas to be more active agents in achieving sustainable growth in South Africa by building their capacity to become entrepreneurs and by increasing their employability.
  • Target groups: young people aged 15 â€" 25 years, community leaders and civil society organisations
  • Focus areas: Creative, digital and social enterprise
  • Working in four provinces and eight communities
  • Hoping to reach 10 000 people, 100 leaders and 50 civil society organisations
The project is coordinated by the British Council, in partnership with Business and Arts South Africa, LifeCoUnLtd South Africa and Livity Africa. All partners have extensive experience in different areas
of youth development in South Africa.

This project is funded by the European Union.
