Sasasa Dlamini - My Study Experience At Harvard

2018-05-22

I have really enjoyed my experience in my first year academically. At first, it was a difficult transition to adjust to. There was also a great deal I needed to learn really quickly in order to cope well. However, it has been a great journey.

I have been lucky enough to have a great support system of friends, mentors and professors who have made the shift easier to manage. I think this year was also made great by the amazing resources I’ve been privileged enough to have access to.

Learning from industry experts and thought leaders directly has been inspiring every day and made critically analysing every aspect of a system or an idea a habit. After learning about subject matter only through theory for a long time in high school, it has been refreshing to get a real-world perspective to the things that I care about.

In my economics class, we discuss the real effects of health policy on the economy with one of the architects of the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare), we investigate real social tendencies in my anthropology and even in my philosophical classes, we grappled with real questions like whether there is harm to death.

What really surprised me this year was the way my academic interests changed over the year. I went in very keen on economics and philosophy and ended up discovering other courses like anthropology and Spanish that are also very exciting and challenging. It has been a great time and I am thoroughly excited to see what next year has in store for me academically.

Application Process
Sasasa's application to Harvard University was a step by step process, which he followed with the assistance of education advisor Susan Knowles from EducationUSA.

He first met Susan Knowles at a career exhibition when he was grade 10 and decided that he would like to apply to the United States. Sasasa not only explored his international options through EducationUSA but also followed up with research on the internet.
