Dr Fareed Amod - Make Great Choices About Your Dental Care

Dr Fareed Amod is a dentist with an entrepreneurial spirit. Crown Dental Studio is one of the few truly 24-hour dental practises in Durban which is not limited to emergency dentistry treatment.

Amod says, "We believe we are the only ones that are open 24 hours a day. The practice's hours of operation help fill unmet patient needs. Our business model not only streamlines patient care, but also prioritises patient convenience by providing care at a time that is convenient to them. A big part of our ability to provide service excellence comes from having the full range of dental services available to our patients all under the one roof."

Dental Hygienists
Teeth perform several functions that are important for our daily lives. They enable us to bite and chew our food, to pronounce certain words. Missing, stained, or crooked teeth can lead to people not smiling. A good smile can have a positive effect on job interviews, meeting a new partner, making new friends and having a confident professional appearance. In addition, tooth and bone loss can prematurely age people's faces by causing wrinkles as well as facial sagging.

"We attempt to educate our patients from a young age and focus on rejuvenating our patients' teeth and gums rather than them needing a therapeutic intervention. Although putting off going to the dentist is tempting, there can be many unpleasant consequences from skipping check-ups. By properly brushing your teeth twice daily, regularly flossing and maintaining a healthy diet, you will not have a problem and can actively prevent gum disease and tooth decay from developing," says Amod. In order to maintain your oral health, the Crown Dental Studio practice hygienists are on hand to provide cleaning and polishing treatments, preventative fluoride applications, as well as stain-removing brightening treatments.

In addition, by having regular three to six monthly professional teeth cleans, plaque and tartar build-up from your teeth, that your regular brushing may miss, will be removed. The bacteria in plaque uses sugars in the foods you eat to create acids which slowly soften and dissolve the hard enamel covering your teeth. You will only feel pain and sensitivity when the decay goes through the enamel and reaches the softer dentin layer underneath. It is at this point that a filling or a crown is generally required before further infection, an abscess or tooth loss occurs resulting in more
complex treatments.

Whitening Procedures
Teeth whitening is one of the most often requested cosmetic dental procedures. Crown Dental Studio has multiple tooth whitening offerings, which range from a basic entry level, to various interim levels and to a top of range package. As each person's teeth are different, Crown Dental Studio offers a complimentary tooth whitening consultation to evaluate your teeth and assess your expectations. "Based on these findings, I will then make customised recommendations based on affordability and time that you have available or in which you require results," says Mateenah Amod, one of the practice's dental hygienists.

If a whitening procedure is not able to obtain the desired effect, then there are several other options available including porcelain veneers, composite bonding and dental implants.

Dental veneers are an easy way to address a variety of physical and aesthetic problems and can improve the appearance of your teeth. "They can make it possible for people to have perfect smiles, which is often important for building confidence in one's appearance," explained Amod.

Dental veneers are cemented to the front surfaces of your natural teeth. These devices are commonly used to hide flaws in teeth such as:
  • Broken or chipped teeth
  • Gaps between teeth when orthodontics (braces) are not suitable
  • Poorly formed teeth
  • Discoloured teeth (which cannot be corrected by whitening)
  • To improve a single discoloured tooth
Orthodontic Treatment
Straightening cooked teeth and correcting a bad bite with orthodontic treatment can potentially correct speech impediments and breathing problems; improve chewing and eating; reduce tooth decay and gum infection; eliminate grinding and clenching of teeth, as well as eliminate jaw joint pain.

Crown Dental Studio uses FASTBRACESĀ® which is an alternative technology to conventional orthodontic treatment plans to address many of the teeth problems encountered. If you want straight teeth without the disadvantage of having braces then clear aligners are virtually invisible trays that are manufactured from transparent, strong medical grade plastic and are generally undetectable by other people. A series of aligners or trays are custom-made to fit over your teeth and gradually straighten crooked teeth, gaps or rotation in an organised manner.

"I can be the best dentist in the world but no-one can interfere with God's work. If you take care of your oral hygiene, you are doing your share of the work and then I can do mine. We offer long term care of your teeth and we will be happy to produce a detailed treatment plan to transform your smile," concluded Amod.

Dr Amod is one of a few dentists in the country, who at risk to his life, is offering emergency work during the lockdown period.
