Ladybird Landscapes - Before honey bees are extinct

2014-10-22

Last year, together, we won an amazing victory when we got 28 European countries to ban the poisonous pesticides which kill bees. Now chemical giants are desperately trying to stop us repeating that win in Washington DC.

Bees don't just make honey -- they are a giant, humble workforce, pollinating around a third of the food we live on, and love. President Obama has set up a task force to recommend how to save them, and industry lobbyists are pulling out all the stops to confuse the science and dilute the plan. But if we give Obama’s environment chief and other task force champions a huge public mandate, we can win again!

The task force will report to the White House on Tuesday! Already 2.5 million of us around the world have backed this campaign. Let’s get an unprecedented 3 million strong petition to save the bees, and give allies on the inside massive public backing. This is not just about saving bees, this is about our survival. Sign the emergency petition now, before the honey bees are extinct:

Bees are vital to life on earth -- every year pollinating plants and crops with an estimated $40bn value. Without immediate action to ensure bees' continued pollination, many of our favourite fruits, vegetables, and nuts could vanish from our shelves and  â..." of our food supply will be gone.

Recent years have seen a steep and disturbing global decline in bee populations -- some bee species are already extinct and last week we learned that some US species are at just 4% of their previous numbers. Just in California -- the biggest food producer in the US -- beekeepers are losing 40% of their bees each year. Scientists have been scrambling for answers. While some studies, often funded by the chemical companies themselves, claim the decline may be due to a combination of factors including disease, habitat loss and toxic chemicals, powerful independent research has produced strong evidence pointing the finger at neonicotinoid pesticides.

It is this startling evidence and the effective public campaigning by Avaaz and partners across Europe that won the EU ban. The US Environmental Protection Agency is required by Congress to regulate toxins, but for years they’ve been influenced by big agriculture and chemical companies and fudged the law. But now the situation has gotten so serious that President Obama has created a new ‘Pollinators Health Task Force’ to to come up with a plan. This is our chance to get the ban.

The Avaaz community knows from our win in the EU how to build a massive public bee campaign smart and strategic enough to stop a backroom deal that only benefits big business. The real experts -- the beekeepers and farmers -- want these deadly pesticides prohibited, now. We only have days to support them. Sign the urgent petition then forward this email to everyone:

We can no longer leave our delicate food chain in the hands of chemical companies and the regulators that are in their pockets. Banning this pesticide will move us closer to a world safe for ourselves and the other species we care about and depend on.

With hope,

Alice, Terra, Alex, Ari, Nick, Laila, Marigona, Ricken, and the rest of the Avaaz team
