The Beekman Group- Relax in Comfort and Style

2016-04-29

The Beekman Group celebrates 35 years of operation in 2016. Located at Port Shepstone on the south
coast of KwaZulu-Natal, the Group's impressive head office is a testimony to its ongoing success.

Brothers, John and the late Bram Beekman started their business careers in the painting industry. The achievements of this enterprise allowed them the opportunity to follow a totally new path. Bram and
John moved to Durban in 1980 and opened their first Vacation Ownership resort at Banana Beach on the south coast of KwaZulu-Natal. From there, the business grew to become a leading corporate player in the
South African leisure industry renowned for its commitment to innovation and excellence.  The Group's portfolio currently includes a variety of leisure products as well as commercial property management.

The Beekman Group's management function was handed over to the younger generation a few years back, cousins Neville Beekman, Wayne Beekman and Cindy Allan lead a dedicated team of staff. However, founder, John Beekman is still on hand to offer advice when required.

The Beekman family's passion for and pride in the continued success of the Group goes a long way to ensure that the business grows. Wayne Beekman said, "The legacy of a family business is significant in that we all have a vested interest in making certain that the company thrives. We are all committed to its
continued growth."

Cindy Allan added, "Our various professional competencies complement each other and allow for the
smooth functioning of the business. In addition, if there are any business challenges to deal with, we are able to talk these out comfortably. We meet regularly over lunch to ensure that the entire family unit is in
agreement over any decisions impacting on the business."

The need to adapt to ever changing market demands is also well recognised. "It is important to evolve with the marketplace. The company is not top heavy and is not pressurised by bureaucratic demands, which enables decisions to be made quickly and for us to quickly change direction as demand necessitates," said Wayne Beekman.

Through constantly diversifying the business, the current products have been molded over time and
complement each other. The business units comprise:
  • The Holiday Club, which was launched in 1993, is the largest vacation ownership club in Africa and accounts for 40% of the total leisure industry's sales within South Africa.
  • Anytime Holidays, which provides serviced self-catering holiday resort accommodation
  • iExchange, which provides vacation exchange options both locally and internationally for existing timeshare owners.
  • Vacation Management Services manages 27 resort complexes and provide owners with high standards of accommodation in a secure environment.

The solid and caring nature of the management team has resulted in the company's recognition as an employer of choice. The head office's coastal location has created a great lifestyle opportunity for staff to work and live and this is reflected in the Group's staff retention rates. A total of 700 staff are employed countrywide and at the head office. More than 60% of the group's employees have been with the group for five years or more (452 employees).  Of these, 248 employees have been with the group for ten years
or more, while 52 employees have over 20 years' service.

The contribution that the staff makes to the Group's ability to provide a solid service is recognised through an annual awards ceremony. In addition, the staff receives an annual incentive to experience resorts for themselves. The employees are also encouraged to continue to up-skill themselves in order to stay abreast of developments in technology as well as increase their knowledge of the industry demands.

The Beekman Group is determined not to lose sight of its core focus, which is to provide customer-centric and professional holiday services.  The company mascot, Max Relax, an African tortoise, well illustrates the desire to provide exceptional facilities to the many holiday makers that make use of the Group's service offerings for their leisure requirements. The various awards that the Group has received over the years bear testament to this goal.

Due to its achievements in the industry, the Group is confident about the future and looks forward to continued growth, especially of sales of its Beekman Managed Portfolio offerings.
