The KwaZulu-Natal Tourism Authority, which operates under the name Tourism KwaZulu-Natal (TKZN), is responsible for the development, promotion and marketing of tourism into and within the province.

KwaZulu-Natal is South Africa’s leading domestic destination, highly popular among visitors from throughout Africa and increasingly on lists of travellers from all over the world. Here visitors are spoilt for choice. With year round warm weather the Province easily combines adventure with relaxation in a wide range of world-class activities and experiences.

KwaZulu-Natal is the home of the Zulu Kingdom and steeped in living Zulu tradition. Annually in September, one of the most colourful and vibrant festivals on the Zulu cultural calendar occurs. The Royal Reed Dance sees one of the most dignified celebrations of the Zulu nation. More than 10 000 maidens, each carrying a reed stick, form a procession celebrating their preparation for womanhood.

The Freedom Route promotes the main freedom icons of this province such as Mahatma Gandhi, John Langalibalele Dube, Alan Paton, Albert Luthuli, Nelson Mandela and others.

The freedom nodes around Durban include the KwaMuhle Museum, Cato Manor and other townships around Durban; the Inanda Heritage Route, which includes Mahatma Gandhi’s Phoenix Settlement and Dr John Dube’s Ohlange Institute, and the Luthuli Museum in Groutville.

The freedom nodes around Pietermaritzburg include: The Old Prison, the Gandhi Statue, the Alan Paton Centre, Sobantu Township, Manaye Hall and the Nelson Mandela Capture site near Howick.

KZN’s coastline, with its string of small villages, pretty beaches and warm sea, has always been one of South Africa’s favourite year-round holiday destinations.

KwaZulu-Natal is a sports paradise and is ideal for the enthusiast. This province is home to a range of worldrenowned annual sporting events, such as the Comrades Marathon, one of the world’s great ultra-events, a top open water swimming event, the Midmar Mile, three-day Dusi Canoe Marathon and a number of cycle races, including the Amashovashova Road Race and the SANI2C Mountain Bike Race.

A host of world-class golf courses, including some of the finest in the country, Durban Country Club, Prince’s Grant, Zimbali, and Selbourne, challenge golfers at every level.

Adrenaline junkies can find their fix in adventure activities including: abseiling at Oribi Gorge, one of the world’s highest gorges, white water rafting on the Umzimkulu, Tugela, Injasuti and Bushmans Rivers, diving among ragged-tooth sharks at the Aliwal Shoal or extreme hiking or mountain biking.

Theatre, music and contemporary dance are also celebrated. The renowned KZN Philharmonic Orchestra regularly performs both classical and modern compositions at a range of events in theatres and at the city’s botanical gardens.

A focal point of Durban’s business district is the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre Durban (ICC Durban), one of the most advanced conference facilities in the world. Flexibility and versatility are key factors in the design of this state-of-the-art technology-driven centre. The local authorities are geared towards international conferences and go to great lengths to ensure their success, from erecting welcoming banners to closing off roads enabling you to include street and beach parties in your programme.

‘Ubuntu’ means that ‘a person is a person on account of other people.’ This long-standing tradition in Zulu folklore continues being applied today, a trait which sets the Zulu Kingdom apart as a truly warm and welcoming destination for holiday and business visitors alike.
