Championing Community Development Through Partnerships - Pivot

2017-06-12

The large-scale greenfields development at Blythedale Coastal Estate on KwaZulu-Natal’s
magnificent north coast will transform the area’s physical and economic landscape - bringing new hope and opportunity to the local community.

In the same way that chemists add a small quantity of a catalyst to increase the rate of reaction between large amounts of reactants, a single property development has the capacity to impact an entire region.

Blythedale Coastal Estate is the most forward thinking development in South Africa,” says Development Director, Andrew Thompson. “The emphasis is on fibre connectivity, frictionless access, green technology solutions, and most importantly, it is a community-based development. We have incorporated inclusionary housing as a key component of this destination catalytic development.”

Blythedale Coastal Estate is the blueprint for inclusive housing in South Africa, to the extent that it has been presented to Parliament. The Estate will include an impressive 1 200 sleeper anchor resort hotel; a 3 600 sleeper low-rise hotel villa complex; a retirement village; 250 luxury sectional title apartments, 2400 freehold homes, and 709 affordable homes linked to some 600 homes for gap housing.

The Blythedale Hills Village will accommodate gap and affordable homes and be anchored by a retail shopping centre, agri-village, a creative mix of commercial, retail and
residential living and a foundation of good education and sports facilities.

Conveniently located for entrepreneurs, a secondary tourism node will be located within this village where local enterprises can be showcased.

“Developments of this nature are about offering a rhythm and a beat for everybody,” says Thompson. “Blythedale is about inclusionary housing, inclusionary tourism, and we are confident that people wanting to ply their trade will be able to do so close to home, within a secure environment, where skills transfer, job creation, housing, small business opportunities are all a top priority of the developer.”

“Our inclusionary lifestyle philosophy is all about people, participation, community, security, wealth creation and lifestyle,” explains Thompson.

“It is the company’s philosophy to extend beyond the borders of the estates we develop,” says Thompson. “It doesn’t make sense to create islands of wealth amidst a sea of poverty, but rather to harness the economic potential that a development brings for the positive.”

The 1000 hectare site is a catalytic estate development, which will create 10 000 permanent jobs, 110 000 construction jobs and unlock six villages within the Estate. Operating in the private sector, developers of Blythedale Coastal Estate, eLan Group, encourages cooperation and private public partnerships, using the eLan Foundation as a vehicle to kick-start initiatives. As more companies look to the triple bottom line - profit, environmental responsibility and social awareness - business is now operating with a conscience.

“Our development integrates the natural beauty at Blythedale to create a superior day-to-day lifestyle for residents’ migrating to the north coast and an unforgettable holiday experience for tourists,” says Thompson.

“We expect the same to happen in KwaDukuza, where KwaDukuza will move to a new town centre, Blythedale. A new hub and node will be created,” says Thompson. Blythedale is simply the next level of estate living along the north coast of KwaZulu-Natal and in South Africa as a whole. More than just another property development, Blythedale Coastal Estate offers a sense of community, delicately balanced with the privacy that you would require from a holistic, all-encompassing resort estate. More so, there is a harmony of understated elegance that goes hand in hand with the breath-taking natural surroundings within this north coast getaway.

Besides, the picturesque lakes and dams found throughout the Estate, Blythedale Coastal Estate features 3 km of prime, unblemished, north coast beachfront, providing for some dazzling views of the pristine Indian Ocean. Golden sandy beaches are ideal for both swimmers and fishermen interspersed with rocks and gullies; optimal locations for the casual angler.

The tranquil coastal forest at Blythedale contains over 200 species of sub-tropical birds, indigenous to KwaZulu-Natal. The 320 hectare natural forest also features an abundance of wildlife, such as bushbuck, reedbuck and two species of duiker. There will be no man-made structures encroaching on the forest’s natural beauty; with conservation being the main concern and with the end-goal of achieving nature reserve status.

Thompson says: “Local and international demand has exceeded our expectations, with the initial two phases already 80% sold out. The pre-launch of the third phase which includes apartments and hospitality is scheduled for July 15, 2017.”
