Ezemvelo is entrusted with the long term conservation of the rich biodiversity in KwaZulu-Natal, and manages more than one hundred nature conservation areas.
Eco tourism and the effective management of resources are critical to achieving this mandate.

Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife provides for tourism in protected areas, offering a wide range of wildlife including over 600 bird species, an array of flora, and activities from walking trails and horsetrails, to skiboat, shore and inland fishing, diving, hunting and mountain climbing.

The areas include the uKhahlamba-Drakensberg Park , the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, the Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Park; Ithala Game Reserve, Weenen Game Reserve and a host of smaller parks and nature reserves, with accommodation facilities ranging from luxury lodges to bush camps, camping and caravaning sites.

Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife also contributes significantly in the area of conservation research, both through internal research infrastructures and in the support of priority research projects. Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife encourages responsible tourism, which is "Responsible travel to natural areas that conserve the environment and improves the well being of local people". The tourism levy charged to tourists is channeled to local communities for development.
