Thousands are expected to attend the historic Heritage Day celebrations to be held in Chatsworth. In keeping with Chatsworth's 50 year celebrations, the premier’s office of KwaZulu-Natal have joined forces with several political, community and religious organisations to host a diverse Heritage Day celebration in the heart of Chatsworth on September 24.

The Heritage Day celebrations, a first for Chatsworth, will take place at the Westcliff Sports Grounds, at 9am, with a series of fun filled activities for all age groups and a key note address from the premier of KwaZulu-Natal, Dr Zweli Mkize.

Residents can expect a spectrum of colour, music, praise songs, eastern and western dancing, all the aspects which makes South Africa a diverse country.

One of the organisers and a prominent Chatsworth community leader, Pooh Govender, said that it is an honour for Chatsworth to be part of these celebrations. He said, “Heritage Day is a public holiday which encourages South Africans to embrace their cultural heritage and diversity of their beliefs and traditions. The Chatsworth community can expect nothing but the best. A lot of planning has been put in by committee members and we are certain that not only will residents have a memorable day spent at the grounds, they will also reconnect with their roots. Dr Zweli Mkize has stated that the programme will celebrate diversity in the community which will build bridges across social and cultural barriers,” said Govender.

He said that over 10,000 people are expected to attend the event. “An amazing programme has been drawn in keeping with the theme of Heritage Day. A 3km street parade has been created which will officially kick of the day's proceedings. The parade, which will include drum majorettes, decorated vehicles, mascots, singers and dancers, will lead to the Westcliff Grounds from Westcliff Secondary School. Residents are urged to participate in the parade to experience first-hand the different ethnic groups and cultures which make our country so incredible,” added Govender.

Local struggle heroes who were instrumental in the fight against apartheid will also be honoured. A Heritage scroll will be dedicated to these heroes whose names will be inscribed on the scroll, remembering the contributions which they have made in Chatsworth during the 50 years.

“Local organisations are urged to submit names of unsung heroes who have made an indelible mark in the community. Recognition will also be given to the founders of Chatsworth. The scroll will be housed in a well-known Chatsworth property,” added Govender.
