KwaZulu-Natal's New Airport Soon to Open

2010-02-01

King Shaka International Airport is soon to be the primary airport serving Durban, South Africa. Located at La Mercy, approximately 35 kilometers north of the city centre. The new  airport is expected to open on May 1, 2010 (just over a month before the start of the 2010 FIFA World Cup). The existing Durban International Airport will be decomissioned with the last flight expected on the 30 April. Acsa, with the help of local and international experts, has reportedly already developed a special transfer programme for the relocation of Durban International operations to King Shaka.

The airport was designed by Osmond Lange Architects and Planners and will cost R6.8 billion. The project has provided jobs for around 12 000 people and once finished, 8 000 people will take up permanent employment at the airport. This is 3 000 more than the current staff complement of Durban International.

Future capacity is not a problem either. Durban International is expected to reach its limit by 2015, whereas King Shaka has been designed to expand in stages, up to a projected maximum of 45 million passengers by 2060.

The airport will form part of the Dube Tradeport, which will additionally consist of a trade zone (being linked to the airport's air freight component), facilities to support the airport such as nearby offices and transit accommodation for tourists, an integrated agricultural export zone and an IT platform.
