Thousands of sardines have swarmed along the beachfront at Suncoast Casino in Durban on Wednesday, the KwaZulu-Natal Sharks Board said. Last year sardines failed to show up in Durban.

The annual sardine run is a popular tourist attraction in KwaZulu-Natal which also sees communities gathering on the beach to fill baskets with the little fish. A baskets of sardines is sold for R500. A dozen of the tasty fish costs R40.

Today there are pockets of the fish off Warner and Winklespruit though to Karridene, Ansteys and Brighton Beaches.

Also, netting has taken place near Suncoast Beach and Virginia Beach all the way through to Umhlanga.

The KZN Sharks Board says there is also activity off Zinkwazi and Sea Belle at La Mercy.
The fish are moving rapidly and it's hard to say where they will be spotted next.
Mike Anderson-Reade , head of operations at the Sharks Board said shark safety gear had been removed on the Durban beachfront and bathers should check with lifeguards before swimming in the sea.
