KZN Science Centre educator intern embarking on his journey!

2014-07-09

The KZN Science Centre will be embarking of a new adventure during the next few months focusing on the largest science awareness and intervention mobile laboratory programme in South Africa to date, whilst concurrently packing up their existing physical centre and moving to a new location.

The Science Centre was established in 2002 as a physical centre based at The Gateway Theatre of Shopping. Over the last 12 years The KZN Science Centre has served both the informal and formal education sectors through its many activities within the physical premises and throughout the province through community outreach/mobile science laboratory programmes with to date over one million school children, educators and parents being reached. When our lease came to an end, a decision was made to move the physical science centre to new premises that will guarantee more accessibility, a larger exhibition floor, an exhibit facelift and a more affordable rental model for The KZN Science Centre as a leading non profit organisation.

Whilst packing of the physical science centre at The Gateway Theatre of Shopping will commence on Monday, July 14th, the science centre team will continue with taking the virtual science centre to communities in and around KwaZulu-Natal. This virtual science centre experience will be the largest science awareness activity of its kind in South Africa. The outreach science awareness programmes will include The AfriSun Outreach Programme, The SAP First Lego League Robotics Championships, The SAPREF Saturday Schools Programme, The MiET Keep a Girl Child in School Programme, The KZN Department of Education Science Practical Training Programme and The Department of Science & Technology Public Science Awareness Programme. These programmes will include visits to over 100 000 school children and parents in the coming months.

Chief Executive Officer of The KZN Science Centre, Ms Candice Potgieter has highlighted these upcoming venture saying, "As CEO of The KZN Science Centre, I have been anticipating the start of this new venture and now that it is finally here I am extremely excited and thankful to our sponsors for creating this opportunity of taking our virtual science centre to the masses  free of charge whilst simultaneously having our eyes set on creating a world class interactive science centre that can be easily accessed and identified as the premier interactive science learning facility in South Africa".

The KZN Science Centre, a Non-Profit Organization (NPO #064-359-NPO), offers a great variety of educational programmes. Through a variety of exhibits, workshops, themed holiday programmes, events, presentations and conferences, the KZN Science Centre aims to promote science awareness amongst all citizens and in particular the youth, in order to encourage them to pursue science and technology related professions. As a registered non-profit organization, all funds received by the KZN Science Centre directly support its educational programmes and exhibits.
