Date: 15 Sep 2011

Pretoria - Deputy Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs, Rejoice Mabudafhasi, will on Friday launch the R11 million Working for the Coast project, which is expected to create 112 job opportunities for Mthamvuna and Umkomaas community.

The Working for the Coast: Umthamvuna to Umkomaas project, to be launched at Park Rynie Campsite Beach in Umdoni Local Municipality, KwaZulu Natal, is part of the International Coastal Clean-up Day (ICCD).

It is aimed at creating awareness about the importance of conserving oceans for sustainable development that contribute to economic growth, development and for recreational purposes.

In September, communities around the world take part in the world's biggest coastal clean-up.

During the ICCD, observed on the third Saturday of September each year, organisations and individuals across the globe take part in Ocean Conservancy's International Coastal Clean-up to remove trash and debris from the world's beaches and waterways, identify the sources of the debris and change behaviours that allow it to reach the ocean in the first place.

The theme for the 2011 ICCD is Trash Free Seas. It will be one of the country's build-up activities towards 17th Conference of Parties on Climate Change (COP 17) to be held in Durban. - BuaNews
