Please help Save the Karoo

2018-08-31

A large portion of the Karoo is gripped in the most crippling drought in 220 years and farmers are struggling to survive. Sheep and other livestock are dying at an alarming rate, boreholes have dried up completely and farmworkers are losing their jobs as the farmers simply cannot afford to pay wages.

Farms in the Western, Eastern and Northern Cape have been devastated. The affected area is huge and ranges from Steytlerville in the Eastern Cape to Brandvlei and Loeriesfontein in the Northern Cape all the way down to Riversdale in the Southern Cape.

To save the farmers *Gift of the Givers*, *Boere in Nood*, and *Save the Sheep Sutherland* have embarked on a combined intervention to bring much needed fodder and maize to the drought stricken areas. The three organizations have already been providing assistance to several established and emerging farmers over several months.

Never before have we lived through a drought as devastating as the last four years. Our life savings are totally depleted. There is no money left, not even to pay monthly accounts or schoolfees. This is an urgent plea for help to keep us on our farms. Please, we cannot survive alone anymore.

Gift of the Givers calls on Government to declare the farming crisis a disaster and provide emergency support from the disaster fund.
