First National Bank KwaZulu-Natal Top Business Portfolio Awards 2009

The 3rd First National Bank KZN Top Business Portfolio Awards were announced at a glittering Gala Dinner held at the ICC on the 23 July 2009. The event was attended by an esteemed list of dignitaries and leaders from various government departments, municipalities and businesses. An address by MEC for Economic Development and Tourism, Mr Michael Mabayukhulu who stated, "We in provincial government are delighted to be a part of those who set the bar when it comes to doing business well. Being involved in an initiative such as this encourages us all to push the boundaries of excellence. With the calibre of leadership present here this evening, people who see opportunities instead of challenges, we can be assured that KwaZulu-Natal has people with the necessary goodwill, greater vision and willingness to stand together and continue moving this province towards a prosperous future".

Publisher of the KZN Top Business Portfolio Grant Adlam says, "We are extremely proud of FNB's ongoing sponsorship of the event.  The Awards assist the Top Business Portfolio in showcasing the Province as having a vibrant, dynamic and robust economy, as well as brands the name KwaZulu-Natal as synonymous with success".

An Award is given in each economic sector to businesses that are making a contribution to the sustained economic growth of KwaZulu-Natal.  The criteria are drawn from the principals of the King Report on Corporate Governance 2001 (King 2) and BEE Codes of Good Practice 2007. Publisher Lalita Dhasiar-Ventura says, "Companies must be adhere to best practice in the achievement of balanced and integrated economic, social and environmental performance. These standards can be applied to all business operations in all business sectors".

3. Manufacturing: Southern African Shipyards

4. Utilities: Mhlathuze Water

5. Construction: J.T. Ross

6. Trade: Mr Price Group

7. Transport, Storage and Communication: Mediterranean Shipping Company

8. Financial and Business Services: ICC Durban

9. Social and Community Services: East Coast Radio

10. Tourism: Zimbali Coastal Resort.

11. Municipal (Investment attraction): eThekwini Municipality through the auspices of the Durban Investment Promotion Agency (DIPA).

12. Government (Promoting socio-economic growth): Department of Economic Development and Tourism for the Gijima LED Programme.

13. Partnership Award: eLan Group, iLembe District Municipality, Dube Community,  and the SA Department of Human Settlements.

The winning project for the Partnership award, the top award of the evening, reflects the importance of effective inter-agency collaboration and partnerships.

Blythedale Coastal Resort, one of the most exciting property projects in the country, is a model of what is possible when all stakeholders work together to achieve one vision.Following a recent land claim resolution milestone; Blythedale Hills will become a part of the Resort development, providing more than 1 000 social and affordable housing units for the KwaZulu-Natal North Coast.

The partners taking this landmark development forward are the eLan Group, Dube Community, iLembe District Municipality, and the SA Department of Human Settlements. KwaDukuza Local Municipality in whose jurisdiction the land falls as well as the New Guelderland Sugar Estates and the Department of Land Affairs were also instrumental in the land claim resolution.
