World Bank blames lack of innovation for South Africa's dismal productivity performance

Tuesday 19th September 2017

The World Bank's tenth and latest South Africa Economic Update points to serious weaknesses in the area of domestic innovation, which it says lies at the heart of a worrying divergence in the country's productivity performance when compared with both advanced economies and the country's Brics peers Brazil, Russia, India and China. The study found that productivity in South Africa fell by 6% between 2007 and 2016 as a result of insufficient investment in innovation, while private research and development (R&D) spending had declined by 40% since 2009. view more

Big fall in DBSA disbursements partly attributed to renewables stand-off

Tuesday 19th September 2017

Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA) recorded a sharp fall in disbursements to R12.4-billion in 2017, from a record R17.1-billion in 2016, but has promised to "step up" its role as a catalyst of development in 2018, setting a R20-billion disbursement target for the year. The development finance institution (DFI) had been targeting disbursements of around R16.5-billion in the year to March 31, 2017, and CEO Patrick Dlamini attributed the lower funding figure partly to a refusal by Eskom to sign power purchase agreements with renewable-energy independent power producers (IPPs). The DBSA had, until the impasse emerged last year, played a leading role in funding black ownership and community participation in the IPP projects and had been injecting around R3-billion a year into the programme prior to the stand-off. view more

Fuel cell buses expected to spur platinum demand - Implats

Tuesday 19th September 2017

Buses powered by platinum-catalysed fuel cells are attracting the attention of South Africans, who will visit Germany next month to update themselves on passenger carriers that emit zero pollution into the atmosphere. "There's a lot of interest in fuel cell buses simply because the refuelling points can be centralised at a depot, and we've got a visit lined up to Germany to look at fuel cell buses and trains in October," Impala Platinum (Implats) group executive marketing Paul Finney told Mining Weekly Online during a media roundtable. view more

Building prospects in doldrums despite slight confidence uptick

Tuesday 19th September 2017

Sixty percent of respondents in a recent survey indicated that they are not happy with current business conditions. After declining by 11 points in the second quarter of 2017, the FNB/BER Building Confidence Index improved by 3 index points to 35 in the third quarter of the year. The uptick was in part due to a 29-index point jump in confidence of building material manufacturers to 37, from 8 in the second quarter. This marks their highest confidence since mid-2015. Underpinning the rise in confidence was an improvement in production and export orders. However, sales remained weak."The poor performance of building materials sales reflects the poor underlying conditions in the building sector in general," said FNB property economist John Loos. view more

Cybercrime becoming a major threat in South Africa

Tuesday 19th September 2017

The US Federal Bureau of Investigation has ranked South Africa sixth and seventh on the cybercrime predator list, which means that there is an increasing amount of fraud being perpetrated from the country, says computer forensics company Cyanre CEO Danny Myburgh. Speaking at the ninth Chartered Secretaries Southern Africa Premier Corporate Governance conference in Johannesburg on Tuesday, Myburgh noted that cybercrime was becoming a major problem in South Africa. "It seems as if boards and non-information technology (IT) people are realising that cybercrime can totally devastate an organisation," he said. Myburgh highlighted three types of illegal cyber activities, namely cybercrime, cyberwarfare and cyberterrorism and that, in terms of the latter two, South Africa was not that high on the threat list, he said. view more
